From Bach to Brahms brings together well known—and lesser known—compositions from 200 years of musical history. From the Age of the Baroque, together with J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel, the French composers Jean-Philippe Rameau and Jean-François Dandrieu are included. Bach’s son Wilhelm Friedemann bridges the gap to Viennese Classicism whose greatest exponents—J. Haydn, W. A Mozart and L. van Beethoven—are also harmoniously represented. The Romantic period is ushered in by Carl Maria von Weber and Franz Schubert, while Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann are included as among the greatest composers of the High Romantic; after whom we finally reach Johannes Brahms
The arrangements of these 16 easily accessible pieces in light to moderate difficulty, which were originally written for a variety of ensembles, are a lovely addition to the repertoire for every flautist. The CD is useful for practice, containing as it does demo versions of all the pieces together with separate recordings of the accompaniments. These musical gems can equally be performed with a pianist playing the accompaniments included in the book or along with the CD.
