This collection of original pieces for flute will give you the opportunity to concentrate on all the technical and expressive possibilities of this instrument, switching from ‘brilliant’ pieces, suitable for emphasising the virtuoso aspect, to pieces with a more cantabile character, ideal for perfecting the control of sonority and breathing. The pieces cover a vast musical range in which all aspects of the art of flute playing are explored. Every piece needs well-defined skills - control of sonority, staccato technique, tone nuance, contrasting dynamics, use of different vibratos and melodic interpretation in relation to the piano part.
In playing these pieces it is important you place more emphasis on interpretation than on the purely technical aspect of the work. You must adapt your style in relation to both the period of the composition and to the style of the composer himself. The book takes you from the world of early and baroque music including works by an anonymous composer, and Bach, through the eighteenth century tragic opera style of Gluck, to the atmosphere of the nineteenth century with works by Chopin and Popp. It also includes the cantabile style of French pre-impressionist nineteenth century composers with pieces by Massenet and Fauré.
On the CD you will find a complete recording of each work together with a piano accompaniment track for you to play-along with. The musical interpretation on the CD is the personal one of Franco Cesarini, however this should act as merely your starting point. If the choice of tempos is too difficult, don’t despair. With continued study and practise you will, over time, achieve the skills that let you overcome all obstacles in perfecting your musical interpretation.
