The French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) is with his repertoire of around 400 works, unquestionably the most productive of all twentieth century composers. A stay in Brazil played an important role in his development as a composer: South American influences can be found in many of his works (Saudades do Brasil, Scaramouche). But elements of folklore from other countries (Spain, Italy, Portugal and in the case of Suite Provençale the Provence, in the south of France) have been adapted by Milhaud. His wide ranging repertoire includes piano music, chamber music, songs, choir music, ballet, opera and orchestral works (including symphonies, overtures and suites such as the 8-part Suite Provençale).
